I’ve got a quick question for you:

Who taught you how to pray?

A few weeks ago our son turned 15 which means he got his learner’s permit. It’s hard to believe but now we’re teaching him how to drive!

As parents, we’re always in the process of teaching our kids something. That’s at the heart of parenting. There’s always something to be taught and something to be learned.

That’s also at the heart of discipleship. There’s always something to be taught and something to be learned.

At some point in in your life, someone probably taught you how to do the things you do. Some things are self taught, but by and large the most important things we learn we learn from others.

So let me ask you again, Who taught you how to pray?

Lord, Teach Us to Pray

As the story goes, one day one of Jesus’ first disciples came to him and asked him to teach them how to pray.

Now, I’m not sure who taught you how to pray. I’m sure they did a great job. But how would you like to learn how to pray from Jesus?

Here’s the good news, two different gospel writers wrote down Jesus’ instructions for how we as HIS disciples ought to pray.

As we enter into November, we’re moving into a time of thanksgiving. It’s an important season in the rhythm of our lives to give thanks. And, that’s an important part of praying.

As we enter into this season of giving thanks, and praying, and gathering around tables with good food, close friends, and family, may we also gather at the feet of Jesus our teacher and Lord and learn from HIM how to pray.

One of the best ways to pray, or prayers to pray, is the prayer Jesus gave his first disciples.

We call it “The Lord’s Prayer.”
