Why Marriage Matters

Marriage Matters

Even though we live in a world and in a culture that often suggests otherwise, Marriage matters.

Marriage is sacred, holy, spiritual, and special.

Even when people who don’t believe in God are married, they are still entering into what we call “holy matrimony.”

Why?

Because… we are all created by God in the image of God. It is a holy thing to “become one flesh,” as scripture says.

The movies we watch, the TV series we binge, the music we listen to all suggest that marriage really doesn’t matter.

But our experience teaches us something different.

It matters a great deal.

It matters for so many reasons but maybe most of all because of this… if we want to raise the next generation to know God, love God, and serve God it begins with our children seeing this sacrificial love on display in their parents.

In Ephesians 5, the Apostle Paul teaches some of those early Christians about what it looks like to be a follower of Jesus as a husband, as a wife. But before he gets to those instructions he sets it this teaching about marriage with these words:

“Imitate God, therefore, in everything you do, because you are his dear children. Live a life filled with love, following the example of Christ. He loved us and offered himself as a sacrifice for us, a pleasing aroma to God. …And further, submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.”Ephesians 5.1-2; 21

Imagine this…

When mom and dad are always trying to out serve, encourage, help, support, pray for, lift up, speak well of, defend, and be kind to each other… it has an impact.

I don’t know if you can imagine a home like that, a marriage like that, but when that kind of environment exists at home, when we love each other as Christ has loved us, our kids learn what the manifest love of Christ looks like.

You see, Marriage matters. It matters a lot!

Your marriage matters because it will be a significant part of your kids story.

The truth is, you never know what hangs in the balance of your marriage. But every marriage matters because in your marriage you get to be the manifest presence of the love of Jesus to another person.

In your marriage you have the opportunity to proclaim the goodness and the grace of God realized in relationship. In your marriage you have the chance to live out the Christ life WITH and FOR someone else to the glory of God.

Even though we live in a world and in a culture that often suggests otherwise, Marriage matters.
