How can we know that we can trust scripture?

How can we know that what we have is what they wrote?  That we can see Jesus in scripture and build our lives on these teachings?

In my previous two posts, I gave two reasons why I believe we can trust the Bible.   Today, I want to share another reason why I believe we can see Jesus in scripture.

3 // Jesus Saw Himself in Scripture.

The third reason I believe that we can trust scripture is because Jesus trusted scripture.  I believe we can see Jesus in scripture because Jesus saw himself in scripture!

This reason may not help you if you don’t believe Jesus is who He says He is.  But if you do believe Jesus is who He says He is, that changes everything about you.

I believe that Jesus is absolutely who he says He is and that changes everything for me.

One of the things that means for me is that I believe what Jesus believed. And Jesus believed scripture.

Isaiah Pointed to Jesus

In Luke 4, we have this story…

Luke 4.14-21

Then Jesus returned to Galilee, filled with the Holy Spirit’s power. Reports about him spread quickly through the whole region.  He taught regularly in their synagogues and was praised by everyone.

When he came to the village of Nazareth, his boyhood home, he went as usual to the synagogue on the Sabbath and stood up to read the Scriptures.  The scroll of Isaiah the prophet was handed to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where this was written:

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
for he has anointed me to bring Good News to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim that captives will be released,
that the blind will see,
that the oppressed will be set free,
and that the time of the Lord’s favor has come.”

He rolled up the scroll, handed it back to the attendant, and sat down. All eyes in the synagogue looked at him intently.  Then he began to speak to them. “The Scripture you’ve just heard has been fulfilled this very day!”

Jesus read from the scriptures, from the Old Testament, specifically Isaiah.  And Jesus pointed to Isaiah which pointed the people to Jesus as the Messiah.

We can see Jesus in scripture because Jesus saw Himself in scripture!

In His hometown of Nazareth, that message wasn’t received very well. But Jesus believed that what Isaiah wrote was true. Jesus constantly pointed people to scripture because Jesus believed that scripture would point people to Him!

Jesus, I Want to See You

If you’re praying, “Jesus, I want to see you,” You can see Him in His Word. You can see Him in scripture.

If you believe that Jesus is who He says He is and you believe what He believes, then you can believe that all of scripture points us to One person.  Jesus Christ.
